Finding balance in the masculine and feminine in entrepreneurship

Masculine and feminine energies of the entrepreneur space are horribly out of balance. It is causing constant self judgment and criticism, harmful comparison and competition, and the incessant need for self improvement because we feel never good enough, smart enough or worthy enough.⠀

Like light and dark, joy and anguish, work and rest- the masculine and feminine are not inherently good or bad, but it is out over reliance and appreciation of masculine decision making, logic, strategy, planning, goal setting… that actually causes us to look upon feminine methods with contempt:⠀

⁘ We value facts and data more than the subtle sensations in our bodies⠀
⁘ We are too focused on our goals to listen to our whispers of intuition⠀
⁘ We place more faith in planning than trusting⠀
⁘ We are too busy hustling to leave space for inspiration and creativity⠀
⁘ We value logical thinking more than emotional intelligence⠀
⁘ We are so focused finding a solution for our clients that we forget what it means to listen⠀

It can be overwhelming to want to see immediate change, and help the world re-balance. Many intense emotions have surfaced for me and people I have shared these meaningful conversations with. But then I have to remind myself that is the over reliance of planning and problem solving that got us to where we are in the first place, and the most important thing I can do now is trust.⠀

Trust in my feminine energy. Teach others how they can start to trust. Continue having important conversations. Be patient as inspiration brews.⠀

Trust, trust, trust that together we will be the change the world is waiting for.

How to get back in touch with feminine energy in your business

Masculine and feminine energies are not something that are either good or bad. Everyone has both within themselves, and it is the balance of the two that bring harmony. Especially in entrepreneurship!

Now let me clear up this misconception- balance doesn’t mean in every second of every moment (this coming from the Libra!). Balance could be in the run of a day, or a week or even during a season in your life. But the issue is that, at least speaking from my perspective of corporate western society, the balance is out of whack with male energy calling the shots.

The female entrepreneurs I work with are imbalanced in this way- they have an innate knowing that there must be a different way, but are conditioned by a society that is heavily rooted in the masculine. Embracing feminine energy in business seems foreign and impractical. So they develop the logical strategies, push the sales and follow the blueprints they have been given to run a successful business. But what is lacking in their business is the fulfillment, the creativity, the passion and quite frankly, the deeper level goals and results they desire. I’ve been there, and I know how it eats away at you over time.

How can you get back in touch with the feminine in your business?
⁘ Trust instead of control
⁘ Show instead of tell with the power of storytelling
⁘ Tune into what your intuition is telling you
⁘ Uncover your authentic voice and brand
⁘ Get comfortable with being vulnerable

In order to bring balance to both feminine and masculine energies, first you have to become aware and second listen to what YOUR intuition is telling you on what needs to be implemented where and when.

Are you choosing your own metrics of fulfillment?

How do you measure fulfillment? If you stop and go inwards, is it really your own measure or someone else’s?

What leaves you feeling fulfilled as an entrepreneur isn’t the same as others around you, or it may be similar, but only you know what calls to you when you tune out the noise of the outside world.

At the beginning of this year I was motivated to grow my business to 7-figures, which in itself isn’t right or wrong. You are allowed to want to make 7-figures, and you are also allowed to want to make 5-figures. But in my case, it wasn’t what I wanted to be fulfilled. It was what I thought would make me a good feminist, and a successful entrepreneur, and someone others would want to work with, and if I dig down deeper- someone my mother would be proud of. But it wasn’t me.

And I didn’t really discover what I wanted until I was stripped of control and forced to hold a mirror towards myself, instead of towards everyone around me.

What whispers softly to you in the night? Runs its fingers through your hair? Sends shivers down your spine? Fills you with childlike delight?

Listen to those quiet whispers. Trust them. They hold your truth.

Why personal development IS business development

I truly believe that you can learn all the business tips and tricks and blueprints, but if you are not ready to fully embrace the next step, you will end up feeling frustrated and stuck in the gunk.⠀

How do you know if you are stuck, and what do you do to get through that muck and level up?⠀

Being stuck feels exactly as it sounds- a deep feeling of melancholy from within, even if society is telling you you should be happy because you have crossed off all those boxes. Maybe you are stuck in old patterns or habits, or you are overwhelmed with a sense that there is more for you and you have a greater purpose in your life.⠀

Getting to that next level is so personal, and you truly have to let your intuition lead. Try slowing down and really feel out what you need:⠀
⁘ Is it a matter of taking a deep breath and diving in?⠀
⁘ Do you need someone to hold your hand as you jump?⠀
⁘ Is the noise from the outside so loud that you can’t tune into what your intuition is trying to tell you?⠀

At various times of my life I have needed external support and knowledge to help bump myself back into alignment, and other times I needed to go within and trust myself.

How storytelling gives you permission to work on your shadows

I’ve always thought of my love of reading fiction as an escape. An escape from the mundane, the routine, the hustle of life. But what if it wasn’t an escape at all, but a means of survival?

When I slow down, I realize that it is in the NOT doing that I discover more about myself. All the little things I am drawn towards are like bursts of confirmation that my
intuition is guiding me in the right direction. Including what I am reading.

Think about what you have been drawn towards reading recently:
⁘ What kinds of stories capture your emotions?
⁘ What are the themes of these stories?
⁘ What types of characters are you drawn towards?
⁘ Can you make connections between what your mind is craving and what is going on in your life?

I’ve recently realized that my fascination with the villain or anti-hero in the story has been a way to examine my own shadows. The turmoil, the forbidden, the darkness of these characters gave me a safe place to look at my own darkness. And now the craving to bring to life my own experiences through my own characters.

In my conscious state, I have been burying my shadows deep for a a long time… and even planting deceivingly pretty flowers on to. When you label a hobby as just an escape, it actually gives you permission to dig into the parts of yourself that you don’t want to bring into the light. The things you can only avoid for so long until until they start to scream at you like a raging toddler, demanding attention in exchange for soul growth.

Are you stifling your own potential by ignoring your intuition?

For so long I pushed my femininity aside. The rules of my corporate past were simple, and masculine, and there was no place for intuition in the world of business. I relished in productivity. My worth became centred around my perfectionism and efficiency. The rules made me feel safe and in control.

But I felt trapped in a body that I thought was working against me. It would leave me secretly shoving pills under my tongue in an unoccupied boardroom, in order to also shove my anxiety deeper where it couldn’t interfere with my productivity.

I look back now and wonder how long the universe was sending me signs. How many times did I ignore my intuition in the pursuit of following the rules? How long did I ignore the signs until they progressively grew louder and louder?

Years later, I grew to learn that your business is an extension of who you are as an individual. They are both intertwined. But it is only recently that I have realized how intertwined your personal journey and business are. Your ability to trust your own intuition and cast off the rules that don’t resonate with you, have a direct impact on the success of your business and your feeling of fulfillment.

So I am learning to lean into my intuition so it doesn’t have to scream to be heard. I am learning to trust and surrender. And I feel called to embrace my femininity. It is exhilarating and terrifying, and like a reflex, the rules like to show up in an attempt to try and keep me safe.

“Thank-you,” I tell the rules, “for your concern about my safety. But I am ready to surrender and discover my potential.”

Is your fear mindset preventing you from showing up authentically in your content?

Mindset is more important than you might think. It trumps strategy and blueprints, because if you are standing in your own way it doesn’t matter how many freebies you download, or webinars you watch, or classes you sign up for. Fear effects how you show up in your business, which effects the content you create, which effects how your audience connects with you, which effects the trust they have to invest in you. It is a domino effect.⠀

The first step is being aware that a fear mindset it is even there. We need to be able to identify what the fear is that is blocking us before we can work on dissolving it.

Try starting out by asking yourself these questions:

Are you worried about being seen as an imposter? Of not knowing enough to be seen as an expert?⠀

Do you think your ideas are not good enough? That someone is already doing it?⠀

Are you stuck feeling like you need to appeal to everyone?⠀

Do you fear being judged? Scared of being vulnerable? Of revealing your thoughts and being rejected?⠀

Are you scared of failing? Of not being able to trust your intuition?⠀

Fear is biologically coded into us to keep us safe from perceived threats. But what your brain doesn’t know is the difference between walking out into a busy road or being seen as an imposter in your business. It identifies the threat, and brings in fear to keep you nice and safe.⠀

So as you work on identifying your fear mindsets and as new ones pop up, be kind to yourself. Those fears were only there because your brain believed it was keeping you safe. Next time you notice a fear pop up, ask yourself: is this truly keeping me safe or is it preventing me from growing?⠀

Asking this question can help clarify your purpose

Were you the kid who asked ‘why’ countless times in the run of a day?⠀

No, it wasn’t a tactic to drive your parents crazy (although it can be effective for this purpose too), but a tool used to understand yourself and the world around you. And it is something that entrepreneurs need to embrace to find their purpose.

And I’m not talking about simply asking the top level question of why you became an entrepreneur, but being that curious kid and keep asking why until you are blue in the face!

The conversation could go something like this…⠀

Why did you decide to pursue entrepreneurship? I wanted to be my own boss.⠀

Why? Because I wanted to be in charge of my schedule.⠀

Why? Because I wanted the freedom of flexibility.⠀

Why? Because I wanted to be able to balance my career dreams with being a mother.⠀

Why? Because it is important for me to follow my dreams AND be a good mother.⠀

Why? Because I want to teach my children that they can follow their dreams and make them a reality.⠀

Why? Because having the courage to be my authentic self is important to me and I want to help shine a light for other women.

Now we are getting somewhere! As you dig down, you are able to unearth your values, and these values are what will be the backbone of your content. As storytellers, clear values make your audience care enough to journey alongside of you.

How showing up imperfectly connects you to your audience

Can we talk about showing up imperfectly?

As a recovering perfectionist, this has been a hard one for me to come to terms with. ⠀

I started my career as a graphic designer, at a time when brands (and people) were perfectly polished. But as time went on, audiences wanted more- they were tired of the air brushed models, the sleek layouts, the perfection. People started to crave something that was real and relatable to themselves, instead of an imagined reality that was not attainable.⠀

Over time I have had to let go of the artificial shine, and dig into what an audience really desired- authentic connection. And yes, how you choose your visuals, how you write your content and aligning all of these components is still essential for a powerful brand. But instead of an artificial sheen, these pieces are now chosen to paint a picture of our reality.⠀

I know what you are thinking, these are all great ideals, but how do I apply it to my personal brand? It’s simple- your audience wants to know the real you, not a polished version that they can’t relate to.⠀

Think about the heroes and heroines in the stories that capture us. Are we magnetized to someone who has the perfect body, the perfect childhood, the perfect day in their perfect life? Or are we drawn towards the underdog, the one who faces obstacles, the one who has the most to lose?⠀

When you feel those fears popping into your mind of showing up imperfectly and being judged, just remember- who will your audience connect with more, an artificially polished version of you or the imperfect version that is real?
